Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone as this storm approaches the west coast of Florida. If your home is damaged in the storm, Lowman Law Firm will assist you with homeowner property damage claims. We will work with the contractor of your choice or put you in touch with available roofers and general contractors.
As with personal injury cases, we will work off a contingency basis due to recent legislative changes. This means you only pay our firm once we recover money for your property damage. Please note the fee percentage is less with homeowner property claims than personal injury claims.
It is expected that this storm will be quick and fierce. Safety is always the first concern. The old saying in Florida is “you run from water and hide from the wind.” In major hurricanes, water is always the leading cause of death. Please be safe.
Before the storm arrives, take photographs of the exterior and interior of your property. If your home suffers damage from the storm, these photographs will be helpful in submitting a claim to your insurance company.
Here is a few tips for after the storm passes:
- DO NOT drive on flooded roads, walk through a flooded house, or use generators that are not far enough away from your home (DO NOT use generators inside your home or garage).
- If your house or personal property has been damaged, take photographs before removing it! Take a photograph of the make and model of personal items so you can recover the appropriate funds later.
- Lots of people will come to this area (“storm chasers”). Make sure you read any document before signing it. Ask for their qualifications. Google them. Know who you are working with as these people are crucial in restoring your home.
- We can assist with obtaining additional living expenses from your insurance company to stay in a hotel or short-term rental.
- We can assist with getting a POD or some other storage container to store personal items while you make repairs.
- DO NOT sign a release from an insurance company without speaking to an attorney. They should make undisputed payments that do not require a release to be signed. Most of the time, after a hurricane, you will receive numerous payments as more and more damages are discovered. Signing a release will not allow this to occur.
There’s a lot more issues that can come up after a storm, but after assisting homeowners through the last three major hurricanes, these are just a few recommendations. If you or someone else that you know have any questions about an insurance claim, feel free to contact our office at (352) 829-9750.
